tom123
If I remember rightly, you can use wood ash but not coal ash

Chucky1
That's as I remember it too. Coal ash is supposed to contain tar which can affect their feet.
Egluntyne
That's right.....wood ash not coal.
Old Speckled Hen
I light my fire with newspaper, kindling wood, a few bits of coal to get it nice and hot then logs and pallets . I don't think a little coal hurts. The chooks have been happily dustbathing in the remains for some time. I just riddle the ash to get rid of the nails. The Dogmother
Same as OSH here, mine love the fine ash. I do add some Diatom to it though.
smokiechicken1969
re the above post, does anyone have some good ideas for a good dustbath combination? what else can you add to wood ash and diatom to make a nice bath for them and how often should it be changed? sandyhas3chucks
mine liked the organic compost I tipped iNto their dustbath when I fOund everything else frozen solid. I emptied the rest today and found gazillion moulding bits of corn and lots of sprouts. I think I found the mices saecret stash
