oh no! my hen "big bird" is a cockerel :-(

Recommended Posts

:( Big bird the black orp is a boy :(:(

we were suspicious for the last 2 weeks as she, i mean he, strutted instead of walking. He had also grown massive comb and wattles and a big tail, he also stood differently from my other girls. he had massive thick legs too.

i emailed some pics of him to the lady we bought him from who confirmed our thoughts :( she was very sorry and embarrased  .

the clincher was that the partridge orp who we got at the same time but who was also slightly younger, has recently started to squat when you approach her (eggs soon hopefully :D ) whereas big bird didnt, and he was still quite a feat to handle

infact the breeder struggled to handle her, i mean he, too and remarked on how big he was and how powerful :?

poor big bird. we had all become quite fond of him :( he was my sons bird and he is soooo upset

we will hopefully get some new HENS next weekend as my daughter has reserved 2 for her birthday

has this ever happened to anyone else?

I got mine from leyland in lancs - someone on The Practical Poultry forum- she was only 8 weeks old when we collected her and she did say she would take it back if it was a boy but we found him a home locally.

The lady who breeds my new girls is in cheshire and she also arranges delivery - I can PM you details if you like. I am having a Gold laced Wyandotte and a Rhode Island

red- she had just sold her last two orps the day I contacted her :( but she starts her Inccy up in March again and breeds all sorts of pure breeds. :D
