Thinking about getting a cube - could do with advice

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am thinking about upgrading from my (green eglu) to a (cube green) . In danger of getting carried away and wanted to get some advice before I make a rash decision! Happens a lot when chicken are concerned :D

Not planning on extending my flock at moment (or so I am telling OH ... :shh: )

Having some problems cleaning the run of the eglu as I have it fixed but is so easy to clean the poo trays and wash the whole thing down.

Know the run should be easier to manage with cube but how easy is the actual cube to clean? Do people dismantle the whole thing once a month or just take the back and roof off? Do you ever do a complete clean/ dismantle?

How often do you clean out the poo trays - appreciate that this is personal preference but hoping that will be able to leave for the odd weekend without too much of a stink (with the eglu find that poo does build up quite quickly).

Does anyone block off the nesting box at night? If so, any ideas?

Any advice appreciated! And of course the most important question - which colour?!!

Suze x

Hi Suze, well first things first, it has to be purple obviously

I find the cube actually easier than the eglu to clean. i have never dismantle it completely but then I have been lucky enough not to have been visited by the dreaded red mite, yet!

i clean the poo trays twice a week, but then i have 11 chickens sleeping in there! I give it a 'deep clean' every couple or 3 weeks.

i would definately say go for it, i definately dont think its any harder to clean then the eglu :D (plus room for more chooks :shh::wink: )

I completely disagree with Sandie, lilac is the colour you need.

The cube is easy to clean. I tip the contents of the poo tray out alternate days and replace the newspaper in the trays. Weekly I take off the back and remove trays and bars and give them a wash with soapy water. I wash the inside and dry and spray with poultryshield. The nest box I do less often because they don't sleep in there.

I don't have a pressure washer so it's all done with cloth, washing up scourer and a bucket of soapy water.

It doesn't take long but I get distracted by chickens jumping in to see what's happening  or the need to sit and watch them so I'm out there ages. :D

I'd echo what has been said. I line the poo trays with hemcore, and just pick the poo out every day, as well as picking the poo from the nest box, which also has hemcore. Once a week/fortnight (depending on weather) I take the back and roof off, remove the poo trays and give the whole thing a good scrub. I change the hemcore completely, change the bit of cardboard I use to block up the hole in the bottom of the nest box, and line the poo trays and nest box with Stalosan.

About once a month I scrub the steps and re-arrange the toys in the run, and I replace the hemcore in the run about every 4 to 6 weeks at the moment - maybe less in the summer when they are out more.

It is very easy to clean, much easier than I thought it would be.
