Toots
I have found a large lump on Jessica our wellsummer, I check the girls regularly but i have to admit she is a stroppy madam and i normally only get time to check for mites, her eyes, vent and beak befor she has struggles loose and legs it up the garden. I have been able to give her a good check over today and found a large lump, pecked clear of feathers and firm. She is booked into the vets but i was wondereing if anyone could predice a prognosis? Thanks toots
Tutti Frutti
Whereabouts is the lump, Toots? I remember worrying the first time I saw Penny's preening gland (a bald lump just like you described, above the tail) but it's quite normal! Toots
its about a half a tennis ball in size above her leg, hidden by her wing. I am hoping for an abses, but dont believe it deep down, She is still laying, tell me off all the time and very perky! nice comb, tail up great feathers everywhere else! Tutti Frutti
Blimey I hope someone who knows will be along soon. I'm useless - I'd be straight down the vets (know of 2 - one in Windsor and one in Wokingham, if that helps...?). Good luck! What a shock! Toots
the vet thinks it could be either a cyst or growth however could not get a sample of puss from it. a weeks antibiotics to try to srink it! she didnt want to do anything because she was obviously not in any pain and in great condition otherwise. we just have to see how a weeks corse of antibiotics goes. which is not fun because Jessica does not like being picked up! Grapes yes strokes NO!
Toots
well following the 1 week checkup things are 50/50 She has stopped eating as much, just the odd treat. I havent seen her drinking but i am helping her with that. the Vet has given some probiotics to see if the antibiotic upset her and she may be able to live a happy life with the lump. the next couple of days are critical now. keep encouraging her to eat and drink. Fingers crossed!

Toots
thank you for your thought, unfortunatly Jessica has had to go to the big free range in the sky. we brought her in last night and gave her some water but she could not be perswaded to even eat treats! she wen back to the vets who advised us that there was nothing more they could do and have put her to sleep. Our stroppy, bossy madam will be missed. never the greatest layer but every egg was a treat!
