kirstenelisa
Hi everyone, Can you help? Had 8 hens All well until 2 weeks ago when Egbert disappeared. Lots of white feathers but no means of entry or exit from electric fenced area. Traced feathers up the field. I then got 2 new chickens a heritage skyline and a lovely white star. Now only 2 weeks later the same has happened to the White star, no trace. All the other chickens are fine even the skyline who laid her first egg yesterday although it was brown not blue as I was hoping! We don't think it is a fox as I hear they kill all chickens, we have been in all day and didn't hear or see anything, also electric fence on. We suspect maybe the neighbours dog. Could it jump over fence and back again ? We are quite rural and only have one neighbour who is about a field away, but we have seen the dogs running through our land, Any ideas, suggestions about how to prevent this from happening again, Dudley Ginger Ranger Megazord Ginger Ranger merlin Burford Brown Sydney sussex star Florence Columbine ( should have been green/blue) Tubes Bluebelle Nugget cotswold legbar The Judge Heritage skyline Egbert Coral nova ( taken 2 weeks ago) Supremacy White star9 taken today, no eggs should have been china white) Thanks
Egluntyne
Have you clipped their wings? They could be leaping over the electric fence. It could be your neighbours dog, or more likely, a fox I'm afraid. They have no trouble jumping over 5-6 ft fences.
Ain't Nobody Here
Sorry to hear that . How upsetting . It could have been a fox that was disturbed so didn't get any more of your girls (thankfully). The dog is a possibility too, I suppose. Difficult to know unless you saw something in the act of getting over the netting.
sjp
could be a Buzzard
kirstenelisa
Thanks for all the advice. Wings aren't clipped as we quite like the fact that they could fly if needed. Also Dudley flies over fence and is really free range, comes in the house etc. buzzard is something I hadn,t thought of, we have seen them here. Wha tcould we do about that? kirstenelisa
Yes had a good think and think Buzzard could be the problem. We do have lots here and there were only a few feathers in fenced area and then the odd ones scattered over a wide area, sp thanks for all your help,
emchook
I saw a thread the other day re kites .. someone suggested dangling cd's or similar to catch the light and put them off the area
