Mrs G
I have three hens, who laid an egg each every day until winter kicked in, then we were reduced to one a day - not a problem, although hope the other two start again soon (last year they kept to their 3 a day all through winter - I assumed that was the enthusiasm of youth?) Today DH went to let them out this morning and there was our morning egg, as expected, but then when I went out later to clean them out I found the smallest egg I have ever seen from them - it's probably somewhere between the size of a Quaills egg and a Cadbury's mini egg (other chocolate eggs are available ) Has anyone any ideas what has happened? Is this normal?
sandyhas3chucks
watching for replies, I found one also. about the size if my little finger tip. all tiny and pale inside too. no idea who did it either!
Redwing
Yes it is, its often called a wind egg, usually something triggers the system to make an egg, it gets encased as if it was a yolk and sent down the system, people have found bits of grit inside them others have found nothing visible but to answer your question its not terribly common but it is normal
sandyhas3chucks
mine had little white and a wee pale yolk, and yes ther was a dot on the centre but was soft. oh and it had a very mottled and dark colouring.

Ain't Nobody Here
They can't be that uncommon - after all we have an Omlet Small Egg Leader Board . I've never got onto the Large Egg Leader Board, but you'll note I'm top of this Board .
Henhathnofury
My little gingernut, who has retired from egg-laying does sometimes produce things that look like an old man's nose i.e k"Ooops, word censored!"bly, fleshy etc. One made her very ill, as sometimes these soft-shelled windy things do...... Ain't Nobody Here
That sounds more like a lash . Not nearly as cute as a tiny egg .
Henhathnofury
No definitely NOT cute. Smelly too.... Hopefully, she has stopped...they were not pleasant and I worried for her...especially if you see her wheezing when she lays it. Horrible! jellykelly
I had a mini egg this morning. I hoping that it means that one of my ex batts is coming back into lay after the winter break!
Poached Egg
If only I'd remembered there is a small egg leader board. We had our first wind egg a couple of days ago from our Pepperpot and may have been in the running - especially since I bought new scales which go up 1g at a time - however we used it at dinner tonight (the white was very firm). Since then she has laid two eggs, each apx 10g larger than average!
