Coccidiosis?

Recommended Posts

Can't believe the bad luck we are having. Two weeks ago our white Pekin pullet died of drug-induced anaemia after a long course of treatment for scaly leg mite and mycoplasma (both of which she recovered from thanks to 16 visits to the vet). Last weekend we bought two replacements for her so that our remaining pekin wouldn't be alone. We didn't want to take any more chances with illnesses so we got fully vaccinated hybrid pullets from Thornes. They have been quarantined all week. Today we noticed that one has blood in her poo and is sitting hunched up. We suspect coccidiosis. We have brought her in and will take her to the avian vet tomorrow. I have tried calling Thornes but they are not answering. Does this sound like coccidiosis or could it be something else? Do Thornes have any responsibility to pay the vet's bills or replace the chicken (we have only had her since Saturday). Should we have her put down to avoid infecting the others/future problems? Any help would be appreciated. Sorry for long post! Very dismayed to have yet more problems.

Hello Egghead,

Sorry to hear you are having such a bad time of it.

Yes, they will be responsible to either replace her or pay towards vets bill I would have thought!

She wasn't 'fit for purpose' and also risked infecting your other hens. I would speak to them tomorrow and see what they say. It does sound like coccidiosis to me. Is it fresh red blood?

:( What a terrible time you're having, I am sorry.

Most breeders would rather replace than pay your vet's bill I would have thought, & it should be their choice, but how frustrating there was no answer today, he was probably out in the field.

I'd try 'phoning Thorne's again in the morning. They are good there, & I'm sure they'd want to help.

Wishing you all the best for a good outcome, do keep us posted.

Thank you both very much for your replies. The chickens are at living at my mum's at the moment (until I can get a place with a garden again) so my involvement today has only been over the phone and I haven't seen the blood myself. I'll check with my mum tomorrow and try Thornes again.

Glad to hear that she is better. I haven't used Thorne's, but have heard good reports about them.

Maybe the "blood" was a little but of internal lining that they shed every so often

Agree with Palmer07, that is why I asked about the colour of the blood. Chickens' droppings can be a veritable feast of colours and shapes! You have all of this to look forward to :lol:
