Pikey
What a nightmare to start the morning.....opened the eglu hatch to get eggs out and blood everywhere......girls had rushed out and seemed ok....after checking them and fearing the worse ie a prolapse found that Cookie's foot is bleeding where from what I can see she has ripped her nail. I've cleaned it up (that was fun ) ....washed it and put some aloe vera on there....but can't seem to stop it bleeding. I've tried pressing on it with a tissue and putting flour but still bleeding. She seems fine in herself...hobbling a bit but still managing to scratch around....she and the others aren't pecking at it but have put her in the spare ark just in case. Any idea how I can stop the bleeding??
Christian
Has the claw been ripped off or it it bleeding from the claw? If you can, drag the claw through a bar of soap as that will stem the flow of blood. Otherwise, wound powder from a vet's should do the trick. Good luck! Egluntyne
A spot of cornflour will also do the trick. A little blood goes a heck of a long way!
Redwing
It might be worth getting a styptic pencil for use if it happens again, I have a few of these dotted about to grab in case of any bad bleeding incidents http://www.amazon.co.uk/SA2770-Safe-Sound-Styptic-Pencil/dp/B0018LS232/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=drugstore&qid=1267957085&sr=8-

Pikey
Thanks guys ....cornflour did the trick....obviously plain flour doesn't. I should have known from nursing days that it always looks like more blood that it actually is......just panicked The nail looks like it has been ripped in half but also a bump at the base too (shes an ex batt and has k"Ooops, word censored!"bly legs) ...not sure where exactly bleeding coming from. I didn't want to disturb too much in case started bleeding again. Will clean tomorrow with salt water and put some more aloe vera on. Little tub of cornflour now in the chicken 1st aid box.
