annettec
I have three hybrid girls in an eglu with extension, but have just purchased a cube and we are about to build a WIR for it to sit in approx 18ft x 5ft. At the moment the girls free range sometimes all day when i am home but other times only for the odd hour. The whole point of the WIR is to save our garden !!! Although an ok size the chicken poo, which the dog insists on eating is everywhere and as for the lawn, need i say more ! With the kids running around, just feel we need to contain them ! BUT am now worried will they be ok in the WIR only with very little out time as that is the conditions of my husband building it, is that the garden is saved. I am worried about keeping them locked in as such, although it will be a large run and i plan to put perches, dust baths etc inside. PS Have ordered three new chickens to slowly integrate using the existing Eglu (a frizzle, silkie and legbar ) So total chickens will be 6 Any advice or experiences gratefully received
Ain't Nobody Here
That sounds like quite a big area so I'm sure they'll be fine. They'll probably pretend they can't live without getting out but only when they know you're watching . Could you use some Omlet netting or similar to make them a small freerange area? I use it and it works brilliantly for keeping them off the lawn. That would assuage your guilt and keep your OH happy too .

chelsea
That's a lovely big size - they will love it in there. Just to give them a little bit of out time in nice weather I would maybe fence off a tiny strip of garden or a muddy border that you don't mind them trashing once in a while. emchook
Husbands ! Why do we put up with them !!! I had to do a deal to get my WIR as well.. No more unsupervised FR ... I had to agree as he funded it ! I guess I'll keep him
