Best material for the run?

Recommended Posts

sorry for all these newbie questions but I really want to get this right. My cube will be in a fixed position on bare, hard packed soil. What can i put down on the floor of the run to make it comfortable, safe and to combat the mud (on the occasion that it rains in So Cal) I had intended to use straw and then compost the straw and poop in my garden composter but opinion seems to be against straw. The only hemp product I can get here is small packets of hamster bedding, I can use those for the nesting boxes but using this for the run and changing weekly would be too expensive. I really want to use something that can be composted. Any ideas?

do you find the poop too strong for your plants if you dont compost?

I know it's a risk but as I poo pick the run and coop every day there's not much poo left in the bedding and by the time I use it around the spuds it'll be at least 3 month old and it'll September I hope before it starts to gets dug in it's a risk I'm prepared to take ow and I've only got anough for about a quarter of the spud bed so the rest will have to be done with cow muck but thats 2 years old
