Hey all,

 

I made the huge mistake of having look on ebay at the hatching eggs And now I want to get some sebrights or some yellow millefleur sableboot belgian bantams (that rolls of the tongue!) My current eggs are due to hatch on sunday and I know I shouldnt get more eggs so soon but I cant help myself! persuade me not to!!

It is addictive, isn't it?

 

I say so long as you have room for them, care for them and can wont be stuck with the males then go for it. probably not what you wanted to hear..

I have several sets of eggs on the go at the moment but Most of them are going to other homes, male or female.

 

Ask yourself some questions before you bid...

 

Can you cull the males?

I can but hubby can't...we nearly fell out last time I hatched as my son and I were ready to have the boys for dinner. Hubby had grown too attached. This time I have orders for three cockerels but the rest will have to die. It's unfortunate but I think that if I am going to hatch then I have to take responsibility for the boys no matter how unpleasant that may be.

Have you got separate brooder unit and heat lamps/electric hens for the different aged chicks?

My conservatory looks like a maternity wing at the moment. I have three incubators on the go and two separate brooders each with their own heat lamps, feeders, etc. The chicks will go in together eventually but they need separate accomodation as the pekins are ten days behind the mini welsummers.

 

It might be that you wait until these chicks are older and more independent and see how it goes with the boys and then decide on what you want to hatch next.
