Florence Posted April 12, 2010 Share Posted April 12, 2010 (edited) We have a bluebelle who lays good sized beige eggs and is the most reliable layer,a speckledy who lays beautiful speckled shiney dark eggs,a welsummer who lays plum coloured matt shelled eggs and a colombine who is not laying yet but will hopefully lay blue/green eggs (can't wait)We also have two pekins who are hopeless layers but occaisionally lay diddy white eggs.The nice thing about having a selection is that we alwaysknow who laid the eggs! Would just add that the pekins are fantastic for the children,follow you around,always happy to be picked up for a cuddle and very fluffy,the bluebelle is a bit standoffish and we haven't had the others very long but they seem fairly friendly and the welsummer is very hapy to be cuddled at bedtime. sal_7785 Posted April 12, 2010 Share Posted April 12, 2010 Hiya!! I just picked a couple of chickens up on Friday in North Somerset. The Tickenham Rabbit and chicken centre near Nailsea. They got a lot of new young hens in on Friday and I picked out a gorgeous Columbian black tail which we've called Nuno and a stunning Rhode Island Red called Gomez. They were £21 each and they'll hopefully lay in about 3/4 weeks. The guy there (think he's called Ben) is very knowledgeable and willing to spend time with you to talk through everything. He'll point out what birds you should get if you want coloured eggs as well. They also sell coops/runs, food and everything you'd need to get you started although I did find food etc cheaper at my local pet shop. I would highly recommend a look, even if you fancy just watching the chucks roam free range for a while to get an idea of what type of bird you're after. Or to play with their adorable collie Sam! They've got all types of chicken breeds there as well as bantams!Oh, and they do chicken holidays so if you go away for a couple of weeks they'll look after them for you! Hope this helps! Janty Posted April 12, 2010 Share Posted April 12, 2010 Have a look at the Omlet breeds list. I looked there for months before the cube arrived trying to sort out what I wanted. I knew that I wanted 2 brahmas, 2 cochins and some pekins when I started. The eggs were never what mattered to me. I travelled 3 hours to a breeder that I found who could supply all three and who had a good reputation (Karen from Merrydale Poultry). When I got there she had some lovely hybrids so we brought two hybrids home as well. Now that I know more, I wouldn't have hybrids again. I do like the pure breeds. I have discovered that my hubby has a thing about rich dark brown eggs so we have two marans. We also have two mini Welsummer chicks and in the incy we have three copper black maran eggs and three welsummer eggs. I've probably confused you even more now. Soz! They had light sussex, speckled marans, and other types of marans and other that I cant remember. They tend to get different ones in each time to be honest. They also had a buff orpington there as well. You can just turn up to have a look around if you want. Sally They've got some beautiful black Sumatras now - not good layers but they look stunning!
