Poo in the nesting box!

Recommended Posts

I just got a couple of hens last week (Black Rocks) and each morning when I check the nesting box there is loads of poo in it. Is this normal? I'm using shredded paper in there and am changing it daily to try and get them to use it for laying only. Am I wasting my time doing so? Is it a problem if the poo there? And Is there anything I can do to stop them if it is?

Please help.

my hens used to sleep in the nest box too.

If they havent started laying yet you could try blocking up the nest box to encourage them to sleep in another part of their house. I used flowerpots and cardboard. If they have started laying already then you will need to remove the flowerpots from the nest box in the morning and put them back in the evening. They got the idea after a couple of weeks :)

I had the same problem with my girls on a paper bed...I was cleaning it out daily as it was so filthy!!!

I didn't fill the nest box up again for two days then switched to straw bedding...and now they don't sleep in it!!

Whether it's coincidence, whether they don't like straw or whether they decided they prefered the roosting bars after all, I've no idea!!

Some of ours sleep in the nest box on the paper. As they are in lay there isn't much we can do, so we just go out once they have gone to bed and turf them out of the nestbox. Sometimes (in fact, most of the time) they go back in, but sometimes they don't. It is normal but it is very annoying! The residents of the purple palace have also started chucking the paper all over the run. But although they drive us round the bend, we love them really.
