Why is my LS hen doing this with my Araucana?

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I heard a bit of squawking coming from the run and from the corner of my eye I thought I saw one of my LS hens mounting Juanita, my little Araucana (pictured in my Avatar). I thought I had imagined it, but today I saw her do 'it' again! The LS hen is most definitely a girl - she lays an egg most days and does not crow. Is she confused?

In the absence of a cockerel one hen will take charge, sometimes this goes as far as treading the other girls and crowing - Luckily you dont have the crowing problem too!

Pressing your hand down on the offenders back and holding her down for a second or two every now and again will help her realise she isnt top chook, this may or may not solve the problem

Unless she gets agressive or hurts the others you may choose not to take any action, its all pretty normal

She's showing her dominance to reinforce the pecking order.

It's perfectly normal but it's worth checking that they have plenty of food stations and plenty to do, so no one is missing out or feels they might be missing out. Then it shouldn't last long, once she feels she's asserted her authority. :D

PS...Redwing types faster than me, crossed posts!
