l_ouise
Hello. When i bought my chickens i was also grabbing at everything the poultry supplier sold that i might need - not very organised! That included grabbing a bag of crushed shells for calcium goodness. On here i've been reading that it isn't necessary and too much calcium is bad etc so i don't know what to do with it. Should i just throw it out or should i keep hold of it? If i keep hold of it - when should i give it them and in what quantities? Thanks
chickyhazel
Too much clacium IS a bad thing, but so is too little. We used to give ours crushes shells but we give other things now. A teaspoon a day mixed in should be ok... I think.
l_ouise
what "other things" do you give them now?
chickyhazel
We always have mixed poultry grit out, it has lots of things which help and the chickens take what they need. If they need extra we give them things liek limestone flour and cod liover oil.
Redwing
Providing your hens are adult then a bit mixed with their grit would be ok, they usually dont take it if they dont need it You could also keep it in reserve in case you do get egg shell problems
