How do you go about clipping chickens' talons? And yes, notice how I said 'talons' instead of 'claws' . Both of my hands are covered in little scabs from when my chooks have perched on my hands. I have special nail-clipping scissors that we bought for clipping my bunnies' toenails, but I'm too scared to cut the my chicks' toenails, because cutting my bunnies toenails is hard enough. One of my rabbits is black, and you can't see where the quick of her nails ends, and one time I cut too much off and made her bleed . I've never had the confidence to cut my bunnies' nails again, so I have to get the vet to do it (and they charge an arm and a leg ). My chicks wriggle a lot more than my rabbits, and I'm too scared to cut their nails in case I accidentally hurt them, but I can't keep their nails so long. They have access to the outside when we can supervise them, and I thought that the floor would wear them down, but it obviously doesn't.

 

What should I do?

If they are free ranging, they won't need trimming.

 

it would be very easy to nick the blood vessels if you are over enthusiastic.

 

Why not wear gloves and long sleeves when you allow them to perch on your arm.

As Egluntyne says they normally dont need trimming

 

If you do get to the stage where it has to be done use a good pair of pet nail clippers and only ever take the very tip off, if they have got over-long clip the tip off once a week for a few weeks to gently shorten the nail over time

 

Ive found that if you tuck their wings in and place them on their back they should keep still for you

If they are chicks then I am not sure that they should need clipping yet
