ringworm24
Wow wow wow, I never knew chickens produced so much waste, my lawn is covered in it I expected some but not quite this high volume. I guess there is nothing to be done about it but to fence them off rather than giving them the whole garden which is shame Long shot but are there any tips to address this? Many thanks
jellykelly
You can section off a smaller area - that will contain the poo - however, those vast volumes will be much more apparent in a smaller space. I have some of that builers fencing (plastic orange stuff) and each week I section off a different area for them to free range in . The area does get a huge battering of poo. However, once the area has been changed I give the area a light raking which removes the crusty sun dried poo, give the ground a sprinkling of garden lime and a good soaking with the hose. It seems to do the trick with me.
Redwing
Apart from poo picking by hand no. In hot weather you can blast them with a hosepipe but it will make your garden soggy long term I'd fence them in personally
Barkisland
I just run round with glove and a bucket, pick it up and fling it in the compost bin. It only takes a couple of minutes. (The rhubarb has never been better!).
Carol U
I keep a long handled brush and pan just for poo sweeping and once they're back in their run, I sweep the worst off the lawn and patio and compost it. It only takes a couple of minutes. Whatever is dropped in the flower beds just stays there and it's never killed anything yet. Chicken manure mixed with grass cuttings etc. makes fabulous compost. Forge Cottage
Yes, I have been poo picking today which I do about once a week. I use one of those thin rubber gloves and a tub, and tip the poo in the compost with the veg waste and grass cuttings. No problem and I have just dug the last lot of fantastic compost into our raised veg beds. We move the electric netting pen every couple of weeks to a new quarter of the garden to give the grass a rest. Apart from the little hollows they scratch, you would never know they have been there... So I say, pick it up...
Chucky Mama
I use a cat litter tray scoop and just go around the garden flicking it into a trug. It then goes in the compost, I do it once a week or more often in the summer when we are using the garden more (i.e when it is sunny )
