Height for an enclosed run.

Recommended Posts

Is there a minimum height I should make my run?

I have already built a 2m x 5m enclosure for my 3 chicks but one, Penelope, insists on jumping out. The enclosure I have msade is about a metre high and is styled like a traditional white picket fence. It looks lovely in the garden and I was hoping that the chicks would be content in this. I do not want to leave them cooped up (excuse the pun) in the run attached to my eglu as I want them to have room. I cannot also have them free ranging all day as I have a small boy who finds chicken poo a little bit too interesting for his own good.

My planned resolution to this problem is to put a mesh lid on my pen to stop Penelope escaping but was wondering if this will bee OK for them to have only about a metre in height, or do I have to bite the bullet and extend the run to a full walk in run. Baring in mind that I am 6' 7" this will have to be a tall encloure.

Thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated - my wifes most helpful was to put penelope in the pot.

I think that the standard height is about 6ft. I'm really sorry you are 6ft 7in! Just for a change I'm happy that I'm only 5ft 2in since I can walk through the door without stooping and then stand up quite comfortably! And that is a good thing on this occasion!

Cheers.

Many thanks for all your comments. I think I will try to concoct a lid as it is. At least that way it might save my head being hit on yet another low roof. :boohoo:

Valerie - My wife says that she knows how you feel and that it is wonderful to not worry about the height of your heels.

No idea about how to answer your question - just wanted to say WOW .... 6'7"!!:D:D8)

I wish more men were that height. I am 5'11" and fed up looking down to speak to men when I wear heels! (Including my OH!)

I'm exactly the same. Don't wear heels. My husband thinks hes tall at 6 foot haha I grew up with the norm being about 6ft 4 so he seems short to me

Mine started as 6 foot side panels but by the time I had lifted one side so that the water drained off its pretty high. I would think it would only just s"Ooops, word censored!"e a 6ft 7er

A netting lid would work

Instead you could consider putting a 'loose' batten and chicken wire section about a foor high pointing upwards and inwards from the fencing (think prison fence) the chooks will find it harder to get out of that

Also make sure they arent using anything as a launch pad and that coop etc.. is back from the fence

Clip their wings if not already done

I think you'll struggle with a WIR as I think there is a maximum height allowed for a temporary structure :?::?:
