Ros
Hi Just got back from holiday this afternoon and our chooks have been cared for by our usual reliable 'sitters' We noticed one of our 1 yearold chooks apparently sunbathing when we checked them, however 3 hours later she hadn't moved!!! So I hoiked her out from under the cube where she had been resting on a bed of straw only to find she was quite huffy, fluffed up, made no effort to escape and was hunched when stood up, also has rather pale gritty looking poo around her vent. I think she may have laid recently as there was an egg on the ground near where she had been resting (my husband says there was one there a week or so ago as well). I have placed her in the isolation eglu with water, and she has snuggled onto the nest area but is making no attempt to stand or go outside. Her mucky tailend worries me as i had another chook where that happened and eventually she ended up bleeding heavily from her vent and I had to cull her Has anyone any ideas what is happening, she does seem to be breathing heavily too Help. Egluntyne
Sounds as if she might have some sort of infection. I'd ask the vet to have a look at her to be on the safe side.
madchick
Hi there Mine's been like yours over last few days with a bleeding vent followed by bad poo. I took her to the vets and he put her on Baytril and wormed her. Today she is much better but the one of the others still has bad poo and today passed worms so might be best to get yours to the vets and get her checked out.Think mine was an infection and the fact i stupidly hadnt wormed them since they arrived 9 months ago. Hope this info helps Madchick
Ros
Sadly we have a deceased chicken, less than 24 hours after my original posting our little hen died. This is the first chook that has died out of 12 in the 2 years since we began keeping them (although one had to be' despatched' ) We had placed our little hen in the spare GO and she seemed comfortable snuggled on a bed of straw, but showed no interest in food or water. We checked with our chicken-sitters who told us she had been out of sorts for a couple of days. We kept an eye on her, but to no avail. Now we are watching the other 10 hens, hoping they are OK Edited May 8, 2010 by Guest
