Clipping claws.

Recommended Posts

What is the best way to trim a chickens claws. Coco has five toes and on one of the back ones the claw is growing back to front so it is curling back towards her leg, I just wondered how to go about trimming it.

Thanks.

You can use dog nail clippers and if she has pale or white nails you may be able to see the 'quick' or the blood vessel running though. You need to avoid this big time as if you cut it it will bleed like stink. It is probably best to just nibble off the overly long bit only. In a dog if you gently squeeze the clippers over the area that you intend cutting they will pull back if it is too near the quick as it is painful. Chickens may not be quite as sensitive but it would be a good idea to look out for a pain reaction before cutting. If in doubt one of the Nurses at your vets will almost certainly do it for you :D

CAREFUL!! Ours pulled back, and we miscut her in the wrong place ! Had to use VetWound powder. The girls will get very aggresive if they see blood, so if you do have an accident you must separate her.

I'd wrap her in a towel and have someone else hold her, it really is a two person job. Good luck.
