Hi guys

 

One of my chickens has been acting as if she is a little under the weather for about a week now.

 

She has stopped laying and appears to have the runs. She is clenching her bottom all the time which moves her whole body.

 

Appart from that she is wandering around the garden and eating.

 

What do you think is wrong?

I'm not much help I'm afraid but have you wormed her recently?

 

It is always a good starting point.

 

Have you also checked for lice etc?

 

Hope she gets better soon.

Yes, I worm them monthly.

 

Not checked for lice, is that around the vent?

I would have said she might have a softie on the way, but my old girls (2 year old, menopausal ex-barnies) are only like that for max 12 hours before they lay it... not a week

 

How old is she Jason? Have you felt her abdomen for any swelling/hardness? Egg peritonitis has just popped into my head, not that I have any experience or knowledge of it. (Wonder if there's anything in the FAQs on it?)

Aside from her vent pulsating like she's struggling to lay, she looks really well - lovely feathers, alert, red comb...

 

Hopefully someone will be along soon who could help. Personally, if she doesn't lay soon, I'd be at the vets on Tuesday (if not before but Bank Holiday weekend - typical!!!).

Ooh and what wormer do you use? I used Verm-X but my vet told me it's more for prevention and recommended Flubenvet for an effective cure.

Hmm

Theres lots of things that *could* be rong with her.

she may be egg bound, if you are really concearned pop along to the vets,

and get a avian specialist to check her out.

She looks to me as if she is struggling a bit with her breathing. Have you listened to her chest? Any wheezing or rattling?

Yes, she does appear to be struggling to breath. She's doing a lot of sitting around today. I reckon she's about 2.5 years old. I'll wait and see how she is in the morning.

I too am suspicious about her breathing. I would get her checked by a vet. She will need worming with Flubenvet when she is well enough too.

Is your poorly hen any better Jason? She looks like mine have looked in the past when they've had peritonitis (with the runny yellow poo and her whole body moving when she breathes in). It could also be blackhead though as that causes runny yellow poo too. Good idea to show a video btw. I've thought about doing the same.
