How many more chooks?*with pics*

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

as you know cheryl passed away a few weeks ago, and i was thinking about saving some lives, of ex batts.

i'm currently planning and getting building materials to build a huge WIR, so they can go out without me being in,

with no worrys that the fox may get them..

i'm building the WIR on this space.. not mesured it up yet, will post the mesurements later.

it will be sectioned off for the ex batts, so they can get fit, and then slowly introduced.

heres the land.

in the wir will be..

2 pekin bantams

2 pilkies

2 silkies

2 warrens

they will free range when im there

i'm looking to use ALL this space..

but adding ?how many? ex batts

be honest, what do you think? how many birds can fit here? :D

thankyou.

edited to put in more info.

Yep hes planning it, even on holiday! haha.

i'm really excited.

its going to have a concreate outline, about 15 cm up, so no foxes can get under, and no hemcore can be kicked out by the chooks.

it is going to have a roof so the place doesnt get muddy, they can have grass, untill it gets ruined them replaced with hemcore! i will put my 2 coops in the run, along with another one for the ex batts.

im afraid it might take a few weeks to get started, though.

then maybe after we've done the run, we could replace the wooden coopes with 2 cubes! :D

wow, very expensive! haha.

I'd say no more than the number of large fowl you have at the moment, or your current girls will be outnumbered and rescued girlies can be aggressive (all down to their need to fight for food and space in the farm :( )...

Unless of course you permanently separate them to protect your current girls, so in effect have 2 WIR under one roof! Then you could have literally dozens! Might be a bit smelly though hehe

What will you do with all the excess eggs though :lol: One thing to be aware of is that older girls' eggs sometimes aren't the quality of young girls - my ex-barnies eggs are wrinkly, have blood spots in (which makes me :vom: as I'm a veggie so blood just seems wrong  ) and the whites can be runny/gloopy. Fine for baking though (but I still remove the blood spots which is fiddly! Actually, I prefer them boiled as they're easier to remove). Hmm, sorry, waffling!!!
