Ammonia smell in coop-first time owner

Hi

 

I am debating on whether to get a classic or go for some bantams? Not sure if this has been asked before. I like the idea of taking the back down on the new eglu for a good clean out. Has anyone got both(silly question) which do they prefer?

The Classic's top comes off completely for a good scrub clean so I wouldn't worry about easy access (which reminds me - must clean them out today...!). Honestly, I'd go for the Classic - it's not much more expensive and as yet there isn't a run extension for the Go so that's definitely a minus point for me. The only benefit I can see to the Go is the option for a side door, but that's it.

I've got both and they both have advantages. The top of the classic is quite heavy and doing the pin clip up can be a challenge on your own so if you have any back problems it's not ideal.

 

The high edge of the nest box does encourage them to roost on it and in that respect the Go is better.

 

The additional doors can prove very useful on the Go, but one disadvantage is that you can't easily unclip the whole run without dismantling half the house.

 

The gap under the house on the classic is ideal for rodents to hide under for them to dig in whereas the go is flat to the ground so they won't want to stand out in the open to dig. At the very least the house itself on the classic needs to be on slabs.

 

I've found that the Go has been absolutely perfect for hatching... because it's totally flat inside I was able to fill up to the bars with aubiose and added a piece of non slip plastic (drawer liner) on top. I could have a feeder and drinker inside and still have plenty of room for mum and chicks. With the classic the nest box has a very high lip and bars are on a slope so you'd need to take them out making the drop even bigger.

I have both too

 

Used to really prefer the looks of the classic, but the Go has grown on me.

If the Go had an egg port, I would say go for that.

Like karlotta said, its ideal for hatching and ducks - can take the roosing bars out and the whole base comes out too to wipe it all down, and its easier to grab a flapping chicken out of the back

 

They're different plastics so quite different in that respect, I'd try and see one (if you haven't already) before you buy

I think I will need one of each now! But thank you for the responses. Will let you know what happens next, I have been offered some bantams that are still quite young so am thinking indie
