I have chickens!

Recommended Posts

Well after a week of research and getting brilliant advice on this forum, I at last have my chickens! Sadly the ex-batts are not available so I have bought some POL hybrids from our local chicken place. The children chose a Goldline - Jenny, a Black Star - Hatty, a DaisyBelle - Belle, and I have a Bluebelle which I cant decide what to name??? As I am a childminder I might let the children I care for name her. Anyway, so far so good! :D

Thank you all for your advice.

We have two Bluebelles and they are the sweetest girlies.

That's lovely to know. Our Top Hen seems to be the Daisybelle at the moment but from the look of her she is the most mature. The Bluebelle is the youngest. I love the pattern in their feathers, they are very beautiful. Although saying that the Black Star is also lovely, she has greeny feathers in with her black and then a red pattern around her neck. Thay are all great, it will now be fun watching how their characters come out over the next few days. The Goldline has already worked out that when my eldest daughter appears she normally has a treat and we have only had them a few hours! She has started to get excited as soon as she sees us coming and knocks on the wire mesh of the run with her beak. Daughter has been told off now as I do not want bad habits starting early! :shameonu: I have said small amount of treats once a day, in the afternoon. Am I mean??

Lovely, lovely, lovely!

We got our girls today too, so I'm sharing your excitement :D

We've got a Rhondda Blue, which I guess is similar to a Bluebelle (looks similar anyway) and she seems to be the friendliest of the 4 - I've already been able to stroke her and hubby picked her up to put her to bed with no trouble. :D

Isn't it amazing how quickly they sort themselves out? - ours are really young but settled in to scratching around and finding goodies very quickly.

Look forward to seeing some photos of your gorgeous brood. :D

Oooh fab! How has your first day been? I had a bit of trouble putting mine to bed. I wondered if they might just climb in when it started to get a bit dusky but they seemed too interested in investigating their new home. We ended up picking them up and putting them in which was exactly what we were told not to do! :shameonu: How did you get yours in? I am thinking of posting a question for advice!

Good luck and I look forward to seeing pictures of your new chickens aswell! :)

Ours wouldn't go to bed either - they didn't even try to climb the ladder into the house.

It was a bit like juggling ferrets...as soon as we lifted one in,she flew out when we opened the hatch to put the next one in! It took until nearly 10pm to sort them out.

Hubby just checked with a torch and they have all happily roosted - even the 8 week old one has managed to perch on the bars. :D

I am in love already!:clap:

Well that makes me feel much better!

I have posted a question for some advice. I suppose that it has been a big day for them, maybe they are like children who dont want to go to bed when something is new and exciting! I am glad yours have settled down alright. Mine are locked in the Eglu so I cant see if they have roosted but it is quiet out their so I presume they are ok. I am already looking forward to letting them out tomorrow and seeing them again!

You will have to check out my post so we can both get advice for tomorrow night! Have fun tomorrow.
