America is screaming at BP because of the oil leakage, which I can understand because it is dreadful, but Bhopal has been in the news again for a few weeks now.

A report was released about the horrendous state of the area and the poor health of the people living there. As far as I'm aware, US authorities have done little or nothing to help clean up that environmental mess.

It seems very hypocritical and unfair of them.

The Indian government is just as bad for leaving it, two lots of powerful people arguing over who's fault it is instead of working together to clean it up. At least BP is taking responsibility even though I'm sure I read that that rig was under American management.

 

 

Apologies if my facts are wrong but this is how I see the situation, I'd like to hear other people's opinions, discussions on this forum have often altered my view of things.

It was so long ago now that I imagine many peope (I include myself) forgot about it. I know it was reported at the time, but I didn't realise that 15000 more people have died since.

 

One the things which shocked me about Bhopal (apart from the incident itself, of course) is that Union Carbide paid the Indian Government $470m in compensation. There doesn't seem to have been much evidence of that compensation finding its way to Bhopal, to the families of victims.

 

18,500 dead, plus the consequent birth defects and cancers. It's appalling.

I have to admit I didn't know anything about this, I wasn't very old at the time so probably wouldn't have been exposed to the full news reports, newspaper articles etc. Certainly does sound shocking from what I have read today

Union Carbide denied any responsibility for years and have never paid out any compensation. People are being born with horrific birth defects and there is so much suffering but no one has done anything. There have been protests and campaigns for years, lets hope that with the jailing of some of the employees then compensation will finally be paid out and Union Carbide will start cleaning up the mess.
