Goodnight Mr Fox

Recommended Posts

Did anyone read the article in todays Times about foxes? It finished with some anonymous advice sent to the author to "buy some cheap supermarket sausages, pack them with paracetamol and leave them in your garden. Result: Goodnight Mr Fox". Controversial perhaps - but would it be effective/humane?

Sounds pretty irresponsible to me not to mention illegal (illegal to poison or gas foxes). It probably would have little effect on foxes who aren't particularly sensitive to paracetamol. I would however very easily kill a cat (very sensitive to paracetamol). It has yet to be proven that it was foxes that attacked these babies. I would be interested to read this article as someone needs to point out how irresponsible publishing this sort of nonsense is.

I'm with Chucky Mama on this one; having very personal experience of foxes I find it hard to believe that children have been 'attacked'. Although they are becoming more humanised as we move into their territories, foxes are naturally and understandably frightened of humans. Yes - it is illegal to poison a fox but even if you were to get away with it, you simply leave vacant territory for another fox to move into! I would be desperately upset if Mr. Todd (who sits on my garage!) got one of my girls, but that is why we have runs, dogs, geese, etc. as we must accept that the fox is just an opportunist who will take the birds if he can?

I have lost three girls to a fox..but would not be prepared to take such reckless action. After all..foxes are only doing what foxes do (and I don't include attacking babies in that ). I am concerned that the media will drum up a load of nonsense. What is needed is a common sense approach..put bin bags back in dustbins with a lid...(its fox central around here the day before the bins are emptied) don't feed or encourage foxes...remember they are wild animals..make sure your girls are safely locked away from them (or if you feel you must free range at any cost be prepared to take the losses) and treat foxes with the respect they deserve.

Jumps off soap box....
