patsylabrador
Could someone tell me if I've got this right, I'm still learning with the chickens. Is this right? - if I give them layers pellets, they contain all the nutrients etc to make them good laying chickens. This though, with my chickens seems to mean they are always broody and so not laying. I figured that if I gave them half and half pellets with mixed corn, that would make them less into laying eggs and so less into being broody. They're not unwell, they just seem so moody all the time recently. I gave them a scoop of mixed corn this morning and they've perked up and have spent most of the day being normal, scratching and dust-bathing instead of all sitting in a big feathery lump, growling. So then I thought that maybe they're not satisfied with the pellets. I'm not enormously fussed about how many eggs I get, but I do like to see them happily pottering about. Also, I'm assuming that if being broody is just about hormones then it makes absolutely no difference what I feed them. So, as you can probably tell, I simply don't know. Redwing
Feed them pellets and keep the corn for treats Broodiness will happen anyway regardless of diet - they stop laying when they are broody but the layers pellets should keep them in good condition
