prof
Hi, one of my orps, Bumble, has always had a MASSIVE crop. Its much bigger than the crops on my other orps. Im not really sure if this is a problem or how to tell if it is? Her crop in the morning is much smaller and like a hard ball the size of a plum. In the evening its huge and swings about from side to side when she attempts to run (she is a large fat lady) . In the evening its soft and balloon like and about the size of a grapefruit. Is this really a problem as she is fat and appears to be healthy thanks
Olly
It sounds to me as if this is normal for her, and it is always important to get to know what's usual for a particular hen, then you can tell if there's a problem. Her crop should be at it's largest at the end of the day, because that's going to get her through the night - if it's gone down by morning, then it's not impacted. Take a look here for information about impacted crops, and if you look further up in the 'Poultry Health' FAQs you'll find a 'chicken health inspection' guide which will tell you what a crop should feel like.
