Unsecure chicken perches

The house we moved into has a well built stable at the end of the garden - perfect to convert to a chicken house, I thought! I have made a WIR attached to the outside - and in the stable itself have put roosting bars near the back, cut a pop-hole through the front wall with a walkway up to it and have put 3 nesting boxes inside. However - it still seems awfully big and not cosy at all - especially when I read all about your chickens snuggling up together in their Eglus! Do chickens prefer to sleep in a restricted space or will they cope with their cavernous coop? Thanks

It sounds great to me . My girls all sleep al fresco in their WIR so they certainly don't mind not being cosy .

My girls are in a converted stable too, but so are their Cubes and Eglus. However, some of them choose to sleep outside the accommodation on the various perches that I have put in there for them - even during the freezing winter we had - so I'm sure that your girls will be fine.

We stabled our horse overnight at an event last year and 5 bantams all slept with him - he didn't get a wink of sleep So yes they will like their stable

I have some chooks that live very happily in a stable, i put two small kennels in for them to use as nest boxes and ran a wooden perch between the two roofs which they slept on
