Cat Shows

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if any forum users show their cats?

I have always had moggies in the past but we are getting two BSH kittens in 4 weeks time and I am thinking of showing them (as neuters). I have never done this before but I am quite interested in giving it a go, purely for fun. I have no intention of breeding or getting a collection of show cats. My two kittens will be very much our pets but they do come from a long line of champions and I think it may be fun. Much as I love my chooks, I love cats even more

Does anyone now of any beginers websites or forums that they could point me in the direction of? Or if you show cats, do you have any advice for a beginer? I have read some basics in general cat books and it all looks rather confusing! The home care side of things I am fine with as I have had cats all my life (except the last 2 years).

Thanks :D

I've done a couple, but my naughty stud boy shoved his nose in some broken glass at new year and that was the end of his rather splendid career :( I'm sure there are some ladies on here who show Maine Coons though, perhaps this could get moved to the other pets thread?

Some cats enjoy shows and some don't - Nero loved them because he is a tart and enjoys having his tummy tickled by total strangers, we took Safiya along to one and she pulled all her fur out on her bum and threw up all day. She never went back. We're thinking of taking Minnie, our serengeti, as she also likes strangers and strange houses ;)

Sorry to hear about Nero :( I hope he has made a good recovery from his accident. What breed is he?

I had never heard of a Serengeti cat before but I have done a Google search and can see they look really special :D Their ears are almost as big as mine  Good luck if you decide to show Minnie.

I showed my Norwegian Forest cat twice but hated it and didn't bother again. I found the people there very very hostile and I got the impression they didn't appreciate me turning up and doing it just for fun  I also found it stressful trying to keep naughty Annie in pristine condition when all she wanted to do was rampage through the garden, rolling in all manner of things, getting slugs caught in her long hair and climbing trees :lol:

Hi, I've shown my two devon rex neuters before and am thinking about showing one of them again. One of them can only be shown in the pet class and the other always comes second in the open class and first in some of the misc classes. Best thing is he loves the attention and is good for the judges. Worst thing is he hates the car journey. I got to know the people who showed next to me and it was nice to chat to some other devon rex owners. Watch out for the loony cat people though. haha.

Tips:

Arrive early as there will be a queue for the vet check.

Take a bottle of water to fill up the water for the cats.

You need a plain white blanket without any tassles. I take two or three as they are bound to mess them.

A white cat litter tray, a white water D cup, a white food bowl, a cat litter scoop.

Put the water at the back above the cat litter in case it spills.

Take some dry cat food if possible as wet can be messy.

You can buy all these items and even cat litter at the show.

You need to get the cage prepared and leave the hall at 10ish, then the judges come in. You are allowed back in around 1 or 2pm then you can see if you have won any rosettes. This is the exciting bit. You run back and forth to the results room to get the results. You are allowed to leave aroud 5pm. If you leave early you can be disqualified.

Hope this helps. Once you get your kittens start training them to get used to travelling in the car and being bathed and groomed. :-)

It's a good fun day although the show is very hectic and crowded. I really enjoyed the first 2 shows, but I thought the last one was too crowded and hot. There is more detail in the show rules:

Show list: http://www.gccfcats.org/showsnew.html

Show schedule for the show I might enter. This is where you get all the rules and further info: http://tccscats.awardspace.co.uk/index.htm

Good luck!

Thank you for all the replies!!

Well I will certainly be doing it for fun. Seeing some "looney" cat people will add to the amusement factor  I can imagine some people will take it all VERY seriously, but there is no need for hostility between owners, after all, it's just a cat show  But that's the attitude that may get peoples backs up so i shall :silenced:

Sorry you didn't enjoy it Griffin but as long as Annie is happy thats the main thing. And NFCs should be outside :)

Thanks for the links Amanda. I was going to try the Three Counties as my first show but chickened out as it seems a big show and so I will go to a smaller more local show to start me off. Good luck with your Devon Rex.

Was it bellekatz you're trying to remember Tash - I seem to recall a thread about Maine Coon cats and Bellekatz was chatting to somebody else who had just had ginger and white one called Archie who they were showing and were having a silver and white one as well but can't think who the second person was.

Hope this helps.

*waves* yes it was me!

Angus is my big red & white boy - I have only done one show with him and none with my blue & white Pippi. I quite enjoyed the day and seeing all those beautiful cats but wouldn't want to do it frequently as it is a very long day. They may be shown again this summer while I am on holiday as they are boarding with their breeder and I am happy for her to show them then.

You are right that is a very serious business for some, the judges opinion is all important for breeders - most of the people there seemed to know one another.

Bellekatz is indeed the lady who shows her cats, she has a lovely brown tabby MC called Alfie who is doing very well!

Yes it is me - havent been on here for ages  I show my big Maine Coon Alfie and my slightly smaller but not by much Maine Coon Layla. Dont know how far you would have to travel for shows in Devon as I actually find that the hardest thing , some cats hate travelling ( my bengal springs to mind!) but Alfie and Layla are as quiet as mice which is good when you are the only one in the car! I only do 4 or 5 shows a year. I would say, start bathing, grooming and trimming claws early so they get used to it , thoguh one of mine hates that side of it so she never gets shown. Alfie is a star and laps it all up - he is a premier now but may never get to Grand Premier as he chipped a big front tooth and had to have it out  Layla was well liked at her first show so I may take her again. Some cats never really like being shown and if they didnt like it I wouldnt take them. Also get them neutered as the neuter classes are generally much friendlier than the adult (unneutered classes) as they are not being used for breeding.

It is lovely to come home with lots of rosettes but some days you get none and other days you get lots, depends on who is judging and whether they like your cat! You can only try it and see if you and the kittens like it :D

Also you can have a look at the Cat Planet website ( I think its www.catplanet.co.uk) as they have lots of info about shows and showing)

Good Luck and hope the kittens arrive soon - pictures are compulsory you know!
