Guest
The hens are in the hottest part of the garden They are cool and it has some shaded spots. They are just hot. And there is like a million flies so of course im worried about fly strike. We have a fly catcher coming next week but the flies are annoying. And I can't be out there as much as I would like because the heat affects my allergies.
Plum
They need shade Rhys can you put something up to protect them? While waiting for your fly catcher I would keep poo picking, it's the best way to keep numbers down.
jennydavies
Have you tried misting the air with the hosepipe - it cools the surrounding air and the flies don't normally like it. I mist the air over near the compost bin to keep the flies away for a while and I cool the air down in the WIR.
Guest
Were building a shade for them now. Well a couple of shades. And I will poo pick anyway. And I tried the mist but it sent the chooks into an almighty panic.
Guest
And they do have shade. Their coops run is shaded and they have an area under the house and under perches. I just need to put more in. I'm going to create little table type of things.
Tutti Frutti
Mr Nora made some fly traps today. 2 litre lemonade bottle, take the lid off, cut the top off about 1/4 of the way down, turn upside down, put the top 1/4 into the bottom 3/4 and then add sugary water. He tried some other flavours too - coke and plain water (he suggested chicken poo as it attracts the flies but I vetoed that 'cos of the smell ). Just in case, I went out and bought a fly trap! We'll see who catches the most!

Guest
I am called exactly the same. Put it just outside the WIR if you have one or just next to the run. I can't stop poo picking and get irritated by hundreds of buzzing flies so I can't watch my girls
