Unsecure chicken perches

I have only had my chickens for a month! Love them to bits however I already been thinking about how I can fit in more chickens!

 

My run is approx 3m by 3m and I have the Go on the inside. I have decided that if i bought another Go, I could place it (or both of them) on the outside and the run would be more spacious. I could easily cut the wire but I am concerned about how to then fit the Go securely in the hole (I hope this is making sense! ).

 

Does anyone have an eglu on the outside and if so do you have any advice on making 'the hole' safe and secure?

 

We have four hybrids at the moment, I think I would just like another couple but what do you think would be the maximum? I let them free range for an hour a day, late in the afternoon when they have filled up on their proper food!

I don't have a WIR, but do have GOs with runs on.

 

I think that I'd fashion a short tunnel piece from weld mesh and attach to the GO like the run does and then attach that to a GO shaped hole in the weld mesh on the WIR, using some sort of metal tie to join the two together.

 

Does that make sense??

Hi, I have my Classic on the outside of the WIR, it is raised off the the floor on three layers of paving slabs and placed so that there is easy access to egg port, poo tray and pin lock to remove cover for cleaning. OH attached it by cutting a hole in wire slightly smaller than eglu then bending wire out to fit over the exsisting attachment holes on eglu (holes where the supplied run was attached using washers and screws provided), he then added a collar of a strongers wire mesh wooven to the bent out section of wire mesh, using (you've guessed it) yet more wire. All that to sooth my paranoia with security but it has worked wonderfully and allows me to close the door on the eglu and clean it without any interference from the girls and on those early winter mornings when i'm in a rush to get to work, I can leave them in the eglu while I sort out the frozen water, without have to chase any escapees round the garden. P.S. I only have the 3 chickens but from what I have read on here you maybe wasting your money getting that extra classic, it seems given the choice they all pile into one house together

I have both a classic & a Cube butted up on the outside of my run - see the picture on my signature.

 

Have you considered a Cube without the run,then selling your current Go ,rather than having 2 houses?

I adore your set up. Lovely design of runs and eglus, looks nice but also looks very functional!

 

Great ideas , my favourite would be to have a cube and sell the Go but I am concerned that at some stage I might need to isolate a hen and having two separate might be useful, on the other hand I would only have one house to clean. I am not sure my OH would appreciate me purchasing one so soon, although my birthday is coming up....

 

Its amazing what you can do with wire and cable ties! Maybe I will have to come up with something inventive!

 

Cinnamon, do you think another two hens as a maximum? If so I was considering maybe delaying until next year so that when my existing four slow down with laying I will have two more laying for another year? I feel happy with the space I have given them so want to avoid overcrowding!

Its a personal thing - you will know if they are too overcrowded.

I will say though that however many hens & Eglus you have they WILL all crown into one to sleep at night.
