sadietoo
Although we live in West Sussex I had only ever ventured into East Sussex as far as Brighton. Having been to the Hop Farm Festival at Paddock Wood at the weekend (great apart from Bob Dylan who has been subsequently described as a "fairground charlatan" by one disappointed fan ), we thought we would do a whistle stop tour of East Sussex and Kent. Visited Canterbury..not terribly impressed honestly, they wanted to charge us £8 each to walk around the Cathedral Grounds - we passed-... Sandwich (lovely and yes we did have a sandwich for lunch there ), Deal - also very lovely ,then did an overnighter at The Hope Anchor in Rye, cannot recommend the hotel or Rye highly enough - if you have never visited, prepare to be enchanted. The next day we went back for Dungeness, (wanted to take some arty type photos and to see Prospect Cottage...again it didn't disappoint....btw someone with a beach house had a sign up saying Free Range Eggs..but although there were a couple of coops in the backgarden it didn't seem there were any chickens in evidence - perhaps they were out surfing ) finally Camber Sands...mmm..well probably very nice if you live there but not really my cup of tea. We then went back through Battle..and that is where English Heritage really really annoyed us. We were running quite late, but thought we would stop for a cup of tea, and a glimpse of the battleground if possible. We followed the signs to the parking, straight off the high street only to find we were faced with the choice of go through the barrier and pay £3.50 to get out or...well actually that was the only choice, since you could not turn round, and no ticket was issued and no attendant so even if you went straight back out you would still have to pay £3.50. I will be writing to English Heritage, what on earth must visitors from abroad think of us?!! Anyway, apart from that we had a fabby time. ..didn't see much evidence of Chicken Keeping generally (although of course I had my eyes peeled for signs all along the road)..are you out there Kent and Sussex Chicken keepers??? Seagazer
Oh dear that's not very good is it. What a cheek! I love Rye, one of my most favourite places to go when we go down to our caravan, hubby likes it at the weekend as all the bikers go down to the harbour car park At Dungeness there is a really great place to get fish and chips, The Pilot Inn. We always sit outside on the picnic benches and have ours as we take our dog with us. Its quite a strange place, Dungeness but there's something about it I really like. Sandwich is lovely too, quite quaint. As you go from New Romney to Dymnchurch, just before you get into the village on the left hand side is a field where they have sheep and they also have chickens free ranging in with them. My OH goes everytime I say 'chickens'
