Chicken with diarrhea and no eggs yet..

Recommended Posts

Hi.

We have had our chickens for just over a month now and one of them still hasn't laid. I had put this down to her being the youngest so I haven't been worried. When poo picking I had noticed that one of them was doing runny poos not curry ones, normal colour etc. Sorry, too much informtion!

I have discovered today that the poo owner is Tallulah my non laying bluebelle and now I am concerned that the two are connected. She is the most timid and definitely bottom of the pecking order. :( We bought them as POL and I am going to ring the place where we bought them tomorrow but I thought I would see what you all thought first as you are such a knowledgeable bunch! :D

Many thanks.

have you wormed them with Flubenvet?

that would be the 1st thing to do. If worms I personally see poo better by day 2 or 3.

a lot are doing wet ones in this heat as they are drinking lots to keep cool, so you need to bear this in mind.

then if still no better and chooky seems ok, then i would pop a sample in the post for Retfords to test.(good cost effective way to get diagnosis a and treatment.

If chooky seems poorly obviously a trip to the vet would be appropriate.

There is another testing service but cannot recall it's name at all.

hope all is well

Thank you, maybe it is the heat. I didn't think I had to worm them yet but I will check with Cotswold Chickens when i go back at the weekend. The lovely Jude there seems to think that they are not eating enough even though I am very careful about when (and if!) they get their treats. She thinks that it could be a sign that Tallulah isnt eating enough so I am going to give her some special feed time. They are always eating so I am not sure why I haven't gone through the bag quicker?

Just want to say that I had a bluebell (Viola) who had the 'squits' ever since we got her (from a reputable dealer recommended by Omlet, so fully vaccinated etc). Because of her continued diarrhoea and grubby vent, we struggled to keep the flies away. Throughout her life her eggs were weird - she once gave us a triple yolker! - but she suddenly went downhill and the vet diagnosed a tumour. Poor Viola had to be put down. I have heard of other people who have had problems with bluebells and I wonder if they have a weakness in their digestive system?

So sorry to hear about your Bluebelle, that's very sad. :( Being new to chicken keeping I haven't heard anything about problems with breeds, it would be interesting to know of anyone else with similar problems.

I fed her on her own yesterday (yoghurt and mash) and she ate quite a bit. I cant be sure because I haven't seen her in the nesting box (I haven't seen any of them go in tho today! ) but I have had three eggs today and one of them was a slightly different colour to the others we have been getting. She was also very vocal which is what caught my attention! She was standing on the eglu feeder making a racket which made me think she was 'announcing' something!

I will watch her movements carefully!

I will send her poo off to be checked. Thank you.
