dixie chick
Hi Everyone Day one has passed without incident- apart from a little squabbling- the Araucana and the Welsummer have been bossing the others around a bit but its just 'handbags' for now! I do have a couple of questions though. In order to encourage them to come into the henhouse at bedtime I scattered some corn mix on top of the Aubiose covered floor. They all came in and started pecking at it but I then had a panic that they might choke on the Aubiose - is this a possibility and should I clear a patch of floor to scatter the treats onto? Also-do you leave water available for them overnight? I meant to take some photos today but have been so busy settling them in and then going to the farm supplies store to buy some more necessities that I ran out of time! Is it just me or does everyone LOVE those stores! I could get really carried away by all those very expensive galvanised feeders, drinkers and buckets! Olly
They're tempting, aren't they! Don't worry - hens have an unerring instinct for picking up the tiniest items off the run floor, they will have no trouble picking corn out of aubiose, and it will keep them busy and stop them being bored. No need to leave either water or food for them overnight, they will eat and fill their crops in the evening and that should last them all night. karlotta
Feeders and drinkers are a tad tempting... you can always seem to justify buying a couple more.. I think I have nearly as many different feeders/drinkers as I have chickens.
Plum
You better not start looking at the online stores then
Chicken Mad
Feeders and drinkers are a tad tempting... you can always seem to justify buying a couple more.. I think I have nearly as many different feeders/drinkers as I have chickens. Old ceramic bowls for water and a pyrex plates for feed for mine. I don't think they mind roughing it too much! Also I did replace some of the bowls for dog bowls that cannot be tipped over. They did seem to trip over them and spill the water all the time when chasing one another. Plus I could always threaten them with the pyrex plate if they misbehave with it being ovenproof! I have got the omlet grub and glug that came with the in their little shead but they only go there if it is raining very hard. Otherwise they prefer it alfresco!
