migsy
I have just got a new and there is a largeish drainage hole at the bottom of the next box. I have blocked it with a piece of cardboard because I use woodchip in the next area and it simply falls through the hole. What do other people use in their Classic next box? I didn't use straw because of the risk of red mite but perhaps if I dust it with Diatom it would be OK?
Mercedes55
I use soft wood shavings in the nest box and also in the pull out trays. I haven't had a problem with anything falling through the hole in the bottom, I did wonder what it's there for though Maybe wood chips aren't the best thing to have in the nest box, I think they like something nice and soft in there, but I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be able to offer you better advice as I am quite new to this With the Eglu being plastic they say you don't get the red mites, or at least not in the same way that you would with a wooden coop. I do sprinkle a bit of Diatom into the nest box and the whole of the inside of the coop when I clean it out and so far haven't had any problems with any mites. From what I know the red mites like to live in dark corners, like the ends of perches and other areas like that, not sure about the nest boxes, but as I said earlier I'm sure someone with more experience will know
crazy kc
I had the same problem but have now put a round headed ground sheet peg into the hole it fits perfectly . Now if only someone could tell me how to stop the problem with the larger drainhole in the cube nesting box, at the moment I have placed a flexible chopping board/mat in there as I tried chopped straw and shreded paper but my hens still manged to make it end up in the cube run. Ain't Nobody Here
You'll find a clever solution to the cube nest box hole here, about half way down .
CatieB
Hello in my cube nest box I put one sheet of newspaper over the hole to stop my shredded paper falling through. I get on well with this and can easily pick out the area of shredded paper that gets poo on it. Plus I shred my confidential waste paper so do two jobs in one. Roobaloo
Thanks for the advice! I wonder why Omlet put the hole there anyway? I would guess for drainage and 'sweeping' during cleaning...and also air flow (as traditionally people use straw) which would allow the bedding to "breathe" and help reduce dust. ...I don't know for sure though!! CatieB
We use shredded paper and it doesn't fall through the drainage hole it works fine. Thats because mine is cross shredded tiny bits --- call me Mrs over security conscious So if you do use tiny bits of paper or bedding a sheet of newspaper over the hole will work a treat.
