Becka
I'm interested in growing some potatoes in potato bags for autumn and winter harvesting. I'm in Central Scotland and I wonder just how suitable they would be to grow given the weather and frost? Does anyone have experience of growing potatoes at this time of year and would have to chit them before planting? Many thanks, Becka
TAJ
Potatoes are not generally frost hardy, so they would need a lot of protection. Tracy
Lesley
Do you have a polytunnel or greenhouse? - they would probably be fine in there. I've only grown Christmas potatoes in a polytunnel - in the balmy Midlands.
Couperman
I think the idea with these spuds is to plant them around about nowish, grow them on in the sunshine then move them into a greenhouse before the first frost. Once the leaves have died cut them off and then the spuds keep in the compost. On Christmas morning hey Presto you have loads of new tatties waiting. Is it worth the hassle? - not sure. Is it cheaper than buying supermarket ones? - No Will you buy Supermarket ones anyway in case yours don't work? - probably. Will yours taste better than the ones you bought from the supermarket? - HELL YES Is it worth the hassle? see above. Kev.
