Duck advice!

Recommended Posts

Hi

we have had chickens for ages and I am desperate for ducks! We currently have 2 empty Eglu's. (one with a rabbit base and the other converted to rabbit altough we still have the chicken base)

What is a DUCKLU? chicken with roosting bars removed?

looking at a medium breed not big but not call duck size, what would recommendations on numbers be? Also during the day when out would they be ok in the run? or would they need constant access to much bigger area?

I would use a chicken eglu with the bars removed as you can just pull out the tray and empty really quickly. For beginner ducks go for Khaki Campbells, 2 will be fine in an eglu but the run is too small. Maybe fence in an area 3m x 3m with membrane and gravel down or keep them in a large grass area with omlet netting around and keep it moved so they have fresh grass. They can eat Layers pellets but need a dog bowl type thing and they need fresh drinking water every morning. Their pond will get dirty immediately but as long as you empty it every 1-2 days then it will be fine.

Think the ducklu is just a classic with the roosting bars, so that'll be fine :D

We've got the Go grub, just a big bowl, and a hanging feeder for the chickens, and the ducks can use both :P

Ours have 2 big tub trugs to use as a pond.

I've got 2 Aylesburys in the Go, but could fit another in there fine - they live in the WIR and FR in the garden most of the time.

I got 4 khaki campbells yesterday afternoon! they are 8 weeks old so pretty big, almost full size i reckon, a bit of downey feathers still on their heads but almost all proper feathers.

How long do you reckon till I can mix them with the chooks?

Maybe I was lucky, and he did have Nugget to protect him, but Orville FR'd with the others from a few days old, and they stayed apart but eventually got on fine.

I'd maybe keep them separate for a week, then let them see each other and FR at different times really slowly let them FR together and take intro's slower that you would with chickens, but in a month they could be FRing together :D

They will grow and fill out a bit more, would think you can just squeeze 4 in there, not sure how many Omlet say can fit in there - probably up to 3, they will need a bigger run as Tom said.

they are in the eglu and run at the moment to settle in and quarnatine, (with tub trug for water to splash in) but ultimately the eglu without run (and second spare eglu if needed)will be in the walk in run with the chickens.

Its big, kind of triangular in shape, approx 4ft at the narrowest by 7ft at the widest end and about 16ft long.

when the chickens were free ranging yesterday they wern't bothered by the ducks, and being inquisitive they did have have a good nosey.

how easy will the ducks herd back into the eglu? the chickens just run behins the treat tray but the ducks dont understand that yet as they wont follow the chickens into the run yet not sure how easy this is going to be, Tomorrow they will have had a 4 days so I want to start letting them out.

The ducks tend not to go in on their own. Though they will stick togther (unlike chickens), so you can herd them from behind. If you stand behind and raise your right arm they will go left, etc.

Also if you try and make sure what you're herding them into is on the edge of the area, rather than in the middle - it stops them running behind. After a while they get the hang of it, though in the beginning we put small boards beside the entrance just to stop them keep missing the target.

One of the boards (just a bit of ply with feet)

Good Luck
