Hello, wonder if anyone can give any advice????

had a very poorly chicken last week, symptoms - standing still in corner / nesting box; drooping feathers; closing eyes; goo from vent (yellow / white trickling out); blood also trickling from vent; vent area pulsating / pushing out insides and then they retracct back in; not really eating but was drinking.

I contacted vet but not very helpful (they dont have experience with chickens) so decided to work through it -

bathed chicken couple times a day in warm water - massaged area around vent and after 3-4 days she has slowly recoved (still not laying / normally active but no blood / goo from vent and starting to come out of box so looking good.

I was working on the basis of an egg bound hen.

Chicken number 2 poorly from last night - same symptoms, I am following the same principle but to have 2 chickens like this in a week is starting to make me think it could be something more???

Can anyone help me with some ideas?

I'd say you need to find a different vet. It sounds as if they might have some sort of infection.

 

Have they been wormed?

not wormed recently, i thought it may be infection, any thoughts what infection?

Flora had runny poo with lots of blood in it on Friday. I suspected Coccodiosis and rang about seven or eight differnt vets till I found one who could treat her as my vet couldn't get the medication till today and I didn't think she would last till today. By ringing round vets from yellow pages I hope I've found a decent vet that knows about poultry and i shall definately be using him again as my vets aren't much use with chickens. The first thing he asked was had she been wormed recently.

I'd get it/them to the vet asap. Call around the surgeries in your area to find one that does know about chickens.

yes i had one ill over the last 2 weeks - she is better and now another has got the same symptons

Sounds as if you may have some sort of infection going there, and it'll need prompt treatment.

 

With any runny bum problems, I'd worm with Flubenvet as a first step, unless the symptoms are severe. Put them on an exclusion diet.... pellets, Bokashi Bran in live yoghurt, ACV and Avipro in the water. if there isn't a response in the first 48 hours, I'd get them to a vet with an accompanying poo sample. Chickens can go downhill very quickly and it doesn't pay to waste time in getting them the necessary treatment if they don't respond at first to home treatment.

so they both had vent issues? It could be that they are suffering egg laying problems associated with trying to lay softies. If this is the case I would look a diet and would definately worm with Flubenvet if they haven't been done for a while. You may be better off getting a consultation with a vet rather than DIY treatment.
