any thoughts on this one - re bedding for my soon to be built WIR ? I can get free wood chippings from a tree surgeon I know... which is of course very appealing. I'd probably have to wheelbarrow it round from the drive, but if asked nicely he might even drive it up to the WIR for me. BUT, how easy is it to clean out and does hemcore make it much easier in terms of management/cleaning etc (found local horse shop which can order it in for me).

They love woodchip because they can look for insects and have fun flinging it around. It composts slower so you need to think how to dispose of it. It's fine for outside runs.

 

Hemcore tends to have threads in it that I found became a bit of a pain picking off the girls feet. It's great stuff smells good of citronella and dries everything up making it easy to manage, composts easily but needs to be kept dry. I swapped to another hemp one aubiose.

 

Given the choice of free woodchip and paying for hemcore, I would choose woodchip.

No question - free woodchip! They'll love digging for bugs in it.

Ours are on woodchip and I see no reason to try anything else. If it were free, even better!

ooh fab news! I was a bit concerned that woodchip might not be healthy or something... and as for composting, my vegetable beds are lying fallow under black plastic, so it can go straight into those, and my compost bins could do with a kick up the wotsit anyway - too many weeds I think. AND, my tree surgeon friend will be delighted, which will be good when he comes to do some more work on our trees....
