sparkysmum Posted August 5, 2010 Share Posted August 5, 2010 Have been offered 2 silkie sussex bantam crosses, but I'm not sure. They have been used as broodies but do lay when not broody . What I would like some info on is: Hardiness. Our winters are wet & windy, will they cope with this. Accommodation. They will share ( after intros) with our pekins. Does this sound reasonable?. They will also share a 20metre ourside run & f/r most of the day. Our ladies are very happy & settled just now so don't really want to upset a peaceful situation but its sooooooo tempting. Mollie333 Posted August 6, 2010 Share Posted August 6, 2010 Hi I had a pair of hens, Silkie crossed with a Pekin. They was lovely. And only one went broody once, which lasted 3 days with dummy eggs under her, then she just left the nest (was seeing if i could hatch..) Jon layed an egg everyday, but Edward on the other hand, who was his sister, layed around 4 a week -not that bad! As i said before it isn't the same breeding, Silkies go broody alot, and are generally a 'Unhealthy' breed according to my vets, but crossed with a hardy breed like the Sussex i suppost they will be OK. We have Sussex chicks at the moment, they are 4 weeks old, and already really hardy and wonder off without mum! We have had Silkie girls in the past, They was out all year round, without heat. Pat died of something simular to Mareks (Unknown, didn't effect the flock- though), and from lack of vision, Peggy, got taken by the fox. Edward my 'Pilkie' also got taken by the fox, Jon died of a prolapse, so not really to do with the breeds. Goodluck post pictures when you have them . coco Posted August 6, 2010 Share Posted August 6, 2010 I have two silkie crosses, one is crossed with a cream legbar and the other with an appenzeller, they are both very flighty and Coco is very daft. They go broody at the drop of a hat and a both very noisy. They survived last winter with no problems. I have a light sussex LF who although young is very freindly.
