We cleaned our girls out this weekend and when we took the dome off and the poop tray out there was water in the very bottom on the grey part. Not loads - but the whole base was coated and a little puddle in the middle where the plastic dips.

 

IS this normal?

 

Im not sure if it was rain, condensation or other? It didnt seem damp or wet on the shavings in the poop tray (above the grey base) so I was thinking that maybe it was condensation that had run down off the dome into the base?

 

Or have I got a leaking eglu?

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a little water in the eglu - especially if there has been some driving rain. I'm assuming you are talking about the nesting box and the part underneath the droppings tray?

 

As long as the bits where the hens are is dry you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

 

When I had an eglu heavy rain meant a little water in the nesting box, but the shavings soaked it up so the hens laid on dry shavings.

I noticed this problem at the weekend too. I didn't worry too much as the water is in the grey part under the "poo tray" but did think it a bit odd. As far as I know, the parts that the chucks have contact with were all dry, which I guess is the important thing. I will check again tonight, we had a monsoon last night, so I will take the poo tray out and see how much water is underneath, hopefully not too much?
