Janepie33
DS went out for a run earlier this evening and a couple of hour later he mentioned that he had run past a fence that had a wood pigeon sitting on it. It didn't fly away when he approached it and it just sat there and cooed when he stroked it. DS later added that the pigeon had rings on it's legs. I suggested that maybe it was actually a racing pigeon, so off we went in the car to see if it was still there. It was! It IS a racing pigeon! It is now sitting in the cat basket and DS will phone the owner in the morning. It's amazing how much info can be stored on a couple of rings around a tiny little leg. We found out - via the internet - that the pigeon was born some time this year and that the owner lives somewhere in the Portsmouth area. We have offered it some water and meal worms but it's not interested. Hope it survives the night. Will keep you posted.

Janepie33
It lives. Don't think it ate any meal worm, but it seems to have tucked into the mixed corn!
Lavenders_Blue
We have racing pigeons land in our garden from time to time. I guess we must be on a racing flightpath Many years ago, when I was a little girl, we had a racing pigeon take up residence on a window sill! It stayed for about a week or so before it finally decided to get on and continue its journey. We named it Walter, goodness only knows why
jackie45
We had a racing pigeon land in our garden in June. It roosted on the garden furniture. I fed it the girls corn ( husband said I was encouraging it to stay) We went onto the racing pigeon website which advised us to do nothing for 48 hours. If it was tired out it would recover. Fat chance! After this period we went back to website and gave them all the numbers and next day there was a letter with the owners details. We were about 90 miles away. Problem - the owner didn't have a car and we didn't want to drive all that way. Eventually a friend of the owner came to collect it. We had lots of fun getting it into a box, took all day. In total we had it for 8 days. A few days later the owner phoned to say thank you and to ask if we had seen it again as it had gone missing!! We called it Homer. I thought that chickens were hard work!!
Mr Rhode Island Red
I keep racing pigeons myself Mine try to squeeze under the garage door and attack the mixed corn, if the garage is closed they try the hen house
Old Speckled Hen
When I was working I used to get found ringed pigeons brought to me quite often. There is indeed a website where you can report the ring number but I found that most owners were unwilling to pay for their birds return on the assumption, I expect, that once lost it would be a poor flyer in future races. I used to sneak them into Pembroke Lodge Gardens in Richmond Park where it was well known that all birds there were VERY well fed by visitors to the gardens. The first time I did this I stupidly left the ring on and a well wisher, having spent much time recapturing the pigeon, brought it back to me I always used to take the rings off after that My daughter and I used to visit the gardens a lot when she was little and we often used to see our repatriated birds. They always looked sleeker and in better nick than the ferals. PS I did report them first, by the way, but I only ever managed to get one bird home in a special box supplied by British Rail..............
