Buying Bantams in Oxfordshire

Recommended Posts

After having a browse on the internet I have narowed my search down to Pekins, silkies and Orpingtons. I'd like 4 to 6 young hens and would prefer to get them at the same time) to avoid the whole business of introduction

I'm prepared to wait for nice birds so no rush.

Does anyone know of a breeder in Oxfordshire that either breeds one or more of the breeds mentioned above.

There are some pekin breeders in Banbury, details are in the ads in the back pages of Practical Poultry magazine. I'd be prepared to look further afield though, mine came from all over the place as I hunted around to find just what I wanted.

It's just my opinion, but I'd wait for fresh stock in the spring when you will have more choice.

Yes more than prepared to wait. Healthy good stock is obviously preferred. I'd like more than one type of Bantam and would also prefer to get them in a 'tight' time period to avoid the problems of introducing younger birds to an established group (been there, done that - don't want to revisit  ) So a breeder of more than one type would be good - wherever they are.

I know of three people who breed those but not one that breeds them all

Silkies in Brackley, Pekins in Rugby and bantam Orps in North Northamptonshire, so all within about an hour from Oxford

Now is a good time to source quality stock as show breeders are picking their top ones from this years breeding stock and selling off the others (which will still be extremely good quality) 'retailers' will have little pure bred stock left so the breeders direct is the best place to go to at this time of year

Nottcuts garden centre near Wallinford does Silkies. You may not like the idea of buying chicks from a garden centre but we have used them for one of our Slikie hens and the price was actually slightly less than that charged by a breeder near Portsmouth (advertised on the net). The little hen we have is very healthy, fully vaccinated, has started laying and is very tame as she had been handled a lot. They tell me they will have two white ones (white chicken)(white chicken) 1st week in October. The only thing, and this rather amused me, was that she was keen to go to bed at 5.30 in the afternoon even on a sunny day, presumably because that was when the shop closing time was and her usual bedtime.
