Limping chicky-but otherwise well

Recommended Posts

Help...went on holiday to be told on my return -1 of my chickkys was limping and had been for 4 days. She seemed to be curling her toes up on her left foot, she didnt want to put weight on it, yesterday morning, she was lying down

and walking on her knees. Otherwise she is alert, eating, drinking and still free ranges with the other girls.

I lifted her into the cube last night, thought she wouldnt be able to manage the ladder, but she didnt want to come out

this morning. On my return from work, she had somehow managed to get down. She is trying to walk, but think as she is fully grown bluebelle, the weight is too much for 1 leg.

Hoping this isnt as bad I as think - wondering could it be something lacking dietary?

If so any recommendations, Im looking on line tonight, bought some garlic powder and cider vinegar, so thats in

the 2 drinkers.

I'd been crushing up shells and putting in the food, but not sure if this is enough and if it could be calcium deficiency,

but the symptoms seem a bit extreme.

Help... :(

It sounds more that any sort of dietary deficiency. It sounds more like an injury. Could it be broken? To be sure she would need to see a vet. In the meantime make sure that she is rested. She needs confining to a small area with food and water close by to enforce rest. Ideally ensure that she doesn't have to do any climbing up ladders etc. Lifeguard contains Glucosamine which is good for joints.

I have a chuck that has been limping for over a month now. The vet said that it was most likely an infection. He thinks that her kidney is enlarged and pressing on her sciatic (sp) nerve. She has had ABs (marbocyl) for a month and is still no different. But so long as she is eating drinking and getting around i'm going to leave her be.

I hope that you chuck starts to improve for you.

She seems better today, lifted her down the ladder, she wasnt bothered about grapes etc, but was trying to free range

with the others. Its a good idea normally, just not at 7 in the morning, when I have to leave for work.

She is trying to stand on it, but lifted her into the cube again tonight, first one in, and she wasnt trying to get back out.

Ive checked her leg and foot, and nothing too obvious to me, but not sure to the untrained eye, what I should notice. All I can do is compare her foot and leg with the other one!

Not good news - Spot fell out of the cube after I lifted her in, and I was closing the door. She couldnt stand up or get onto her knees. So I lifted her up but she couldnt stand on the bars and was getting distressed. So brought her into the house, got her settled and felt her legs, feet etc, left leg is still limp, but toes not curled up. Not sure if she has injured herself in the fall, or getting worse. So Ive settled her in the eggport side, and she seems quiet and settled, Ive left the back door open, so can hear any noise/commotion. Thought it was better to put her back than separate her in a box. So vet first thing I think...... :(:(

Bad news Im afraid, took Spot to a vet for a second(experienced) opinion yesterday evening.

Took his advice and now Spot is in chicken heaven, not limping anymore...

I wasnt expecting to lose a chicken so quickly, only been 11 months since I collected my first 4 chickys.

Didnt want to do it, but had to be realistic and think about quality of life, etc, etc, but still not easy. :(

No piccys, as its a bit too technical for me.

Sorry to hear that Jaffa. My 20 week old light sussex is limping today. She is still fast on her feet as I can't catch her but she has an obvious limp. She was fine yesterday when she went to bed and when I let her out at 7am I noticed the limp straight away. I cannot think how she would have injured it overnight and I'm a bit worried. I'll leave it a while and keep an eye on her.

She is absolutely fine now thankyou! I don't know what it was. I can only think that she twisted it or something and it hurt for a while. It did look bad at the time and I was worried but she made a full recovering within 24 hours. My chickens don't mind the rain. They are muddy and wet.
