Build your own website advice needed

Recommended Posts

Hello to all you techno wizards out there. I am in the process of creating a website for my small hobby business using one of the free website builders, WIX. I registered a domain name through UK Cheapest, so far so good, however I came to link my site to the domain and 'pointed' the domain host to WIX, but the info message I am getting implies that the web site address will be some long and convoluted one starting with www.wix and loads of forward slashes, and not the domain name that I registered and wanted people to use.

Is there any way I can prevent this without upgrading to some wix package? :(

I have no experience of wix.

Host providers such as JustHost and penguin allow you to host a domain name, which you have dns control over, i.e. you can identify the dns servers. The two mentioned are not free services, but do provide useful extras which I need for my sites. I'm happy with both of those providers.

There are some cheap/free hosting services out there: I sometimes read of them on another forum, so can check, if you like?

Have you looked into a service such as WordPress for creating your site? You might find it more powerful (and SEO friendly) than some of the freebies. Penguin and JustHost both have easy installs for WordPress, and other Content Management Systems.

Found this on the WIX support pages:

Can I connect my Wix site to my own domain?

Yes! After purchasing a Domain from a domain hosting company, go here and purchase an upgrade plan that lets you use your own domain. After upgrading, you can:

1. Connect your domain simply by pointing your domain to the Wix server (216.139.213.144),

or

2. Connect your domain with the Wix name servers.

Go to this page and follow the simple steps provided for either case.

Note: Wix doesn't host domains. The domain will stay at your hosting company but points to the Wix server.

Please also note that it might take up to 72 hours to be updated.
