my girls don't like the eglu

Recommended Posts

I have had my eglu 'Go' for a week and got three lovely little brown hens on Sunday. I kept them in the run until Tuesday then let them into a fenced area of the garden. after their first day of relative freedom they returned to the coop like good little girls, but last night and this evening I have had to lift them out of the corner by the tool shed where they were all cuddled up together, apparently for the night.

Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? I have to say that the corner looks quite cozy, but only until it rains.

I dont have a eglu or cube :( but a more traditional coop, however occasionally if your girls get caught out by the dark when free ranging they may hide in the nearest safest place, as when it gets dark hens cant see so good they will go to the nearest place that looks cosy, not to worry though they will learn soon enough where to go.

Hope it's OK to post here instead of starting a new thread, but I have something similar. My eglu is attached to an enclosed run. Since Spring they sleep on a roost in the run and only use the eglu to lay eggs. I've had them for over a year and they used to sleep in it, but stopped in the Spring. I know they're fine, but do you think they'll use the eglu as it gets colder?

Thanks! I did check for redmite when it first started and gave it a good cleaning, too, just in case. I think/hope you're right and it's the warm weather. We don't actually get really cold here anyway, so who knows? They may stay outside. The very coldest is in the upper 30's and they're such warm blooded creatures. Oh well, whatever makes them happy. I'll check again for redmites, just to be sure. Thanks again!
