Chicken boarders

Today after a bit of free ranging and looking fine I found her straining and with what I thought was another prolapse. I gave her a warm bath and when she strained again I could see that her .. is it coaccia? was protruding and as she strained I thought I saw a tip of an egg. I put my finger on it to be sure and it felt like shell. She kept straining and I could hear her suffering, it was really horrible.

 

When my mum got in, we took her to the vet who said she was definitely egg bound because he could feel it. He then inserted a syringe into the egg and emptied it of the yolk and everything. Unfortunately, she strained again and this crushed the egg. He thinks he was able to take out all of the shell, but there is still the chance she could get egg perotinitis. He also deliberately cut a bit into her coaccia to make it wider because he believed that it had become too tight for her to pass an egg through.

 

He said he felt something like an obstruction, maybe scar tissue that gave her all this hassle when laying and he thought her recent respiratory problems and being run down could have affected her to make her egg bound. He injected her with anti biotic and then an anti inflammatory so it's just seeing how she goes. He said not to hold out too much hope but it's worth it just to see if it's sorted it out but there is a chance she could become egg bound again. If not bring her in and she will have to be put to sleep. She's been through quite a lot so I agree.

 

Fingers crossed. She seems to be the unluckiest little chook ever.

thanks. me neither, but i guess it's like women in labour needing stitches and things. today, her cloaca is still really visible and doing that sucky thing but no attempt at laying today created a new hospital wing for her, will post pics soon
