Bramble
I was just wondering if anyone uses one of these for kitchen composting - does it actually work? I have a couple of compost bins outside to which I normally add compostable stuff, but being a bit of a compost geek I'd love to have a go with a bokashi bin in the kitchen. Any thoughts or recommendations, please? Thanks
Chicken Shirl
Yep, I'm a huge fan and have been for some years. No smell and you can compost all your kitchen waste. We sometimes dig it straight into the veggie garden and sometimes add it to the compost bins. The liquid is a plant food/cleaner for the drains etc: I put some in my dishwasher overnight once a week and we get no food deposit or nasty smells from it. It is quite expensive to begin with but well worth it. Our original bins are as good as new. I can't say enough about the whole system. We also make EM culture but that's another ball game. Bramble
Thank you! Can I ask how big your bin is and do you actually keep it in the kitchen? Sorry to be dim, but what's EM culture? Thanks for advice, I'm getting very keen!!!
figarogir1
I use the bins as well. They are the ones from wiggly wigglers - they are great and I have had them for years. They are about 18" tall I think. I used to keep one in the kitchen and it was fine but I have a small kitchen so now I keep both bins just outside the back door. I don't have any problem with flies or smells as long as you make sure that the lid is on properly.
Ain't Nobody Here
I tried it a couple of years ago but didn't get on too well . The first one worked brilliantly but the next 2 went digustingly mouldy and smelly and I haven't had the heart to try again .

Thanks for advice, I'm getting very keen!!! EM culure is Liquid EM mixed with molasses. You can spray the ground with it and us as a foliar feed. I mix 2 tbsp Molasses with a little warm water add 20mls EM liquid leave to ferment to activate the EM's for a few hours, then mix with 10 lts of water preferably rain water. You can buy a special machine to get the correct fermentation temperature but the method I use is used by a local farmer here so that will do for me.
