Medwriter Posted September 22, 2010 Share Posted September 22, 2010 Holly, now about 4 yrs old (came from Omlet with and Ivy in Dec 2006), has had very watery poos for the last couple of days. She has always been prone to lay softies and have dirty knickers, so I wasn't too concerned at first. She hasn't laid for about 2 weeks, but given her age and the fact that she has also just started moulting, I wasn't too concerned about that either. However, this evening her breast looks very full and puffy. I felt it and it does feel quite squishy. I did try massaging it a bit, as suggested in the post about sour crop, but no liquid came out. But, as I have never done this before, I may not have the right technique. The other obvious symptom is that her comb is looking a bit blue/purplish - again that could be due to moulting. stoice Posted September 22, 2010 Share Posted September 22, 2010 Sounds like it could be. I'd recommend a trip to the vets tomorrow for sure. The watery poos sound like no soild food is getting through - just urea - so it's probably a crop or gizzard problem of some sort. Does she have bad breath? The vet can show you how to help empty her crop by up ending her and gently placing her head floorwards. Chooks have no sick reflex as such so this will help expel the stinky nasty goo if that's the problem. You have to be careful not to do this for too long in one go as she needs to breathe in between expelling. My Ex-batt Gladys never made it from her sour crop but some people have had success. I bought probiotic yogurt for her as well as Avipro for her water, like ACV it helps restore good bacteria in her crop. Some oral thrush medicine has also been advised to have some effect but i didn't get a chance to use it with Glad. Is it just in her crop that is squishy and full? If it's lower in her abdomen that's squishy then it may be peritonitis (When egg fills up her abdomen instead of passing normally) The vet will know for sure. Hope it goes ok. She came bustling out of the Eglu on Thursday morning and went straight to the Grub looking for breakfast. (Needless to say, I'd had a sleepless night and was expecting the worst!) When I let them out to FR she showed her normal chicken behaviour, and later came running for mealworms and squabbled over them as usual with Ivy. So, as there have been no more watery poos and she doesn't really like being handled and would probably find a visit to the vet very stressful, I have decided just to keep a close eye on things for the moment. They were actually due to be wormed anyway, so I have started them on Flubenvet and now have grumpy chooks becuase they can't FR or have treats for a week!
